Project Painted Lady

Which one is the Painted Lady??

What is Project Painted Lady you ask? Well it is not a beauty contest or a competition for make-up artists, nor an actual painting of a lady. A Painted Lady (or Sondagsrokkie as it is known in Afrikaans), is in fact, a butterfly --- Vanessa cardui --- and belongs to the Nymphalidae family of butterflies. The Painted Lady is a common (but we prefer the word successful) and colourful butterfly that occurs on every continent except Antarctica and South America!! And yet, for such a common butterfly, the Painted Lady is only recorded in about one-third of all quarter degree grid cells (QDGCs) for South Africa in the LepiMAP database! When it ought to be observed almost everywhere!

LepiMAP is a joint project of the Animal Demography Unit (ADU) and the Lepidopterists' Society of Africa. LepiMAP is the African butterfly and moth mapping project. It is the continuation of SABCA (the Southern African Butterfly Conservation Assessment) and it aims to determine the distribution and conservation priorities of butterflies and moths on the African continent. LepiMAP is a fun and easy way to do your bit for biodiversity conservation. Anybody, anywhere in Africa can contribute to this awesome Citizen Science project!

So, we need YOUR help! Have you seen this butterfly???
